Scottish Highlanders - Cows
|
These are our fantastic Scottish Highland cows. They are herd-animals living together in clear order. They are healthy and quiet animals who, summer and winter, can take care of themselves. When they see that I brought cattle-biscuits with me, they come galloping towards me, they love so much eating these that they nearly eat my hands too. Shortly before a calf will be born, the cow secludes herself from the herd. Births happen usually without problems because the calves are quite small at birth. When the calf has been born, the other cows come to have a look but it still stays separate from the group till it has gained enough strength, usually after a couple of days, to join the herd with its mother.
Because our cows are such quiet and friendly animals, they let us approach the calf without a problem. I ear-mark the calves myself the same day on which they are born. The advantage being that they are not aware what’s happening so easier to handle. But after a couple of days they find me a rather strange thing and keep their distance a little.
It is because of their nature, that it is easy to put them together with our sheep and horses. For our animals it doesn’t matter one bit if the other is young, old, big or small, all are warmly welcomed in the meadow. |
